Next Module

1. Key Parameters / Parámetros Clave

a. Clarity / Claridad

  • English: Check for evidence of faultiness or particles. Most commercial wines are clear. If a wine is hazy or turbid, it may indicate a fault (e.g., microbiological instability) or an unfiltered style.

b. Intensity / Intensidad

  • English: Assessed by tilting the glass at a 45° angle over a white background. Look from directly above through the core to the rim.
    • Pale: Lightly pigmented; easy to see through to the stem of the glass.
    • Medium: Intermediate color depth.
    • Deep: Highly pigmented; core is almost opaque or very intense right to the rim.

White Wines / Vinos Blancos

  • Lemon / Limón:
    • English: Most common color for young white wines; may show green hues.
  • Gold / Gold:
    • English: Warmer yellow-gold shade; often indicates oak ageing, bottle age, or skin contact.
    • English: Noticeable brown hues; found in very old white wines or intentionally oxidized styles.

Red Wines / Vinos Tintos

  • Purple / Púrpura:
    • English: Deep red with noticeable blue or violet hues; indicates a very young red wine.
    • English: The most common color for young to mid-aged red wines.
  • Garnet / Granate:
    • English: Red with noticeable orange/brown hints near the rim; indicates age or maturation.
  • Tawny / Teja (Ocre):
    • English: Dominant brownish-orange hues; typical of long-aged or fortified wines.

Rim / Borde (Ribete)The outer edge of the wine liquid in a tilted glass.
Core / Centro (Capa)The deepest part of the wine liquid at the center of the glass.
Tears or Legs / Lágrimas o PiernasViscous streams running down the inside of the glass wall after swirling; indicates alcohol or sugar levels.
Clear / Claro (Límpido)Wine that shows no visible suspended particles or cloudiness.
Hazy or Turbid / Turbio (Velado)Wine containing suspended particles, which may indicate a fault or an unfiltered wine.
Bubbles / BurbujasSmall carbon dioxide (CO_2) bubbles visible on the glass surface or rim.

2. Interpreting Visual Clues / Interpretar Señales Visuales

a. Color Hues & Age / Tonos de Color y Edad

  • White Wines / Vinos Blancos:
    • English: Gain color as they age or oxidize, moving from green/lemon to gold, amber, and eventually brown.
  • Red Wines / Vinos Tintos:
    • English: Lose color as they age, evolving from purple/ruby towards garnet, tawny, and brown.

b. Color Intensity & Climate/Grapes / Intensidad de Color, Clima y Variedad

  • Pale Color / Color Pálido:
    • English: Indicates thin-skinned grape varieties (e.g., Pinot Noir, Grenache) or grapes grown in cooler climates.
  • Deep Color / Color Intenso:
    • English: Indicates thick-skinned grape varieties (e.g., Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah) or grapes grown in warm/hot climates with higher sun exposure.

c. Viscosity, Tears & Legs / Viscosidad y Lágrimas

  • English: Dense, slow-moving tears indicate high alcohol content (>14% abv-Alcohol by Volume) or high residual sugar. Fast, thin tears point to lower alcohol (<11% abv) and dry wines.

d. Clarity & Winemaking / Claridad y Elaboración

  • English: Slight sediment or tartrate crystals at the bottom are natural and do not indicate a fault; haziness, however, suggests micro-biological issues or an intentional unfiltered style.

Tartrates / TartratosHarmless, glass-like crystals deposited at the bottom of the bottle/glass.
Sediment / Poso (Sedimento)Solid particles (tannins and color compounds) that precipitate in aged red wines.
Viscosity / ViscosidadThe thickness and resistance to flow of the liquid in the glass.
